With the rise in popularity of isekai storylines in manga and anime, it’s no perhaps surprise that the question, What if one was to be reincarnated as a spider in another world?’ would eventually be asked - and answered. So I’m a Spider, So What? is a popular light novel created by Okina Baba and Tsukasa Kiryu, and the animated adaptation comes from the talented hands of Millepensee Studios. With Shin Itagaki at the helm as director, the series is off to a great start in its premiere, striking a strong balance between comedy and action, and establishing elements that set it apart, already, from other isekai. It is still unclear how the main protagonist - and the other characters - were reincarnated into the fantasy world the story takes place in, but there are subtle hints given throughout the episode, titled “Reincarnation, in Another World?” The first half of the episode deals with the unnamed spider discovering her hidden abilities. Like most RPGs, she is starting off at a low level, and her abilities are not so special. Through numerous trials and plenty of error, the spider is able to utilize her own abilities to capture her first prey and level up certain stats. This first fight scene between the frog and spider also offers a quick glimpse at the well 3D-rendered animated fighting style to come in future battles. The main protagonist admits to being a nobody in her past life - not standing out at all. It could be that her low status in the human world dictated the creature she reincarnated into, and that rule applied to the other characters as well. Unlike the spider, the other main characters that reincarnated are introduced with names and special family ties. The interesting part of the series that so far, everyone is aware of their current status in their new reincarnated bodies, while still holding memories of their past life. In most isekai stories, the main characters lose their memory, or there is only one special person usually the main character that remembers the world from which they came from. In So I’m a Spider, So What?, however, all the characters are aware of their past and present lives. This detail alone will play a critical part in the build-up of the story and will pave the way for characters holding grudges against other higher-ranking reincarnated characters, while also setting up a certain hierarchy in power and abilities. It also appears that the human reincarnations with royalty status woke up way earlier than the spider reincarnate, and have accepted their roles in their new world. It will be interesting to see what other students have reincarnated into, and how the difference in species will develop the overall story. As for the spider protagonist, she's left to slowly explore more and more of the world while developing her latent abilities. It’s unclear if the objective of the reincarnated humans is to return to their homeworld. There is the possibility that their original homeworld actually got destroyed, or maybe there are other forces at work trying to achieve a greater evil. Regardless, the idea of a spider saving the universe seems comical, and at the same time, weaves an interesting story. Waking up in another body or even species is hardly new to the isekai genre, and only time will tell if the animated So I’m a Spider, So What? can stand against other heavy-hitters, like its direct competitors this winter season That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and ReZero.
